SAHARAWI APP – an Application for Medicine Requests
The Saharawi project was carried out by DEV4U on a voluntary and pro bono basis (Dario Berardi, our CEO, is a member of Informatici Senza Frontiere). Another colleague and travel companion was Claudio Rosazza, a highly skilled systems consultant, also an active member of Informatici Senza Frontiere.
The initiative targets Arab-Berber tribal communities residing in the Western Sahara region.
The non-profit organization Informatici Senza Frontiere ONLUS and the association JAIMA SAHRAWI (Reggio Emilia, Italy) were seeking a reliable technical partner to support them in developing an Android application for requesting medicines and verifying availability within a central warehouse. DEV4U was selected to design and implement the solution.
The development of the application, aimed at establishing a pharmaceutical management information system, is part of a larger program funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region (lead applicant: Municipality of Albinea, RE). The regional project is titled: “Support to the activities of the national pharmaceutical laboratory and the supply of medicines for the refugee population in Algeria”.

Within its strategic plan, the Sahrawi Ministry of Public Health identified healthcare cooperation as a priority, focusing its limited resources—due to the global economic crisis—on a set of critical objectives. Among these objectives is the support to the pharmaceutical production laboratory “M. Embarek Fakal-la”, which plays a key role in ensuring a continuous medicine supply for the refugee population.
The Mohamed Embarek Falkalla Laboratory, described as “a pearl of efficiency” in the challenging conditions of Sahrawi refugees, aims to complement the humanitarian aid system by providing locally manufactured medicines.
