FESTIVAL AU DÉSERT – Festival website

The Festival au Désert (Festival in the Desert) is an international cultural and musical event founded in 2001 in Mali, rooted in Tuareg traditions and aimed at combining modernity with cultural memory.

The festival hosts artists from across Africa and around the world, offering a stage for traditional music as well as contemporary and experimental forms, while promoting cultural exchange and dialogue between local and international communities.

Historically, it has been held in some of the most evocative sites of the Malian desert: initially itinerant, with editions in Tin Essako and Tessalit, before settling in Essakane and later near Timbuktu, for both logistical and security reasons.

The festival is part of traditional Tuareg gathering cycles known as Takoubelt (in Kidal) or Temakannit (in Timbuktu), moments when communities come together to sing, dance, share news, and discuss communal matters.

Beyond musical performances, the Festival au Désert has inspired several documentaries (including Le Festival au Désert, Dambé: The Mali Project, The Last Song Before the War, Woodstock in Timbuktu) and live recordings.

Due to instability in Mali, the event has not been held regularly since 2012. Nevertheless, its legacy has been carried forward by initiatives such as the Caravane culturelle de la paix, an international traveling festival that continues to spread the values of the original event wherever possible.

Cultural mediation, support for peace, and the preservation of Saharan traditions remain at the heart of the Festival au Désert’s vision, which has played a crucial role as an ambassador of dialogue, hospitality, and cultural coexistence.

Today, the festival represents not only a spectacular event but also a symbol—a bridge between the desert and the world, an invitation to embrace culture as a tool for peace, identity, and renewal.
